Men and Plastic Surgery

If you are a man considering plastic surgery and you’ve found your way to this blog post, you’re not alone. About 11% of plastic surgery patients are men, and while that may not sound like a large percentage, it IS a large number of men who are seeking to look and feel better and taking actual steps to do something about it. That’s a good thing!

What types of procedures do men generally get? Let’s take a look at the most common ones.

Facial Plastic Surgery For Men

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job” is a popular choice for men. A man may choose to have his nose re-shaped to correct a deviated septum so he can breathe more easily, to fix a “broken” nose, or simply to create a more balanced look with his other facial features. I am a proponent of natural results with my patients, so my goal is always to meet the patient’s expectations while ensuring he still looks like himself–only better. The male nose is structurally different than the female nose, and I take that into consideration as well. One patient of mine, featured in my before and after gallery, desired a slightly smaller and straighter nose along with the removal of a bone spur that was obstructing his breathing. The results are subtle and effective. He is happier and his breathing is greatly improved!

Blepharoplasty, the official name for eyelid surgery, is another common cosmetic surgery procedure for men that I perform on a regular basis. Our eyes can really show our age, and the removal of excess skin and under-eye bags can freshen up a man’s appearance, making him look younger and more vibrant. An eyelid lift can also correct impaired peripheral vision that is caused by ptosis (sagging) of the eyelids or excess eyelid tissue. But, men, you need to be careful to choose the right plastic surgeon because the standards for beauty are not the same for men and women. For example, elevating a man’s brows too much or removing too much upper eyelid skin can feminize the face. You can watch a video of me speaking specifically about plastic surgery for men here.

Some men also opt for a full facelift to lift sagging skin and tighten facial muscles for a more dramatic improvement. I also talk to all my male patients about non-surgical facial rejuvenation like BOTOXfacial fillerschemical peelslaser treatments and my skin care program for men. What a difference it makes in a man’s appearance when he addresses the quality of his skin as well as the underlying structural issues!

Body Plastic Surgery for Men

By far the most common body procedure men request is a male breast reduction for gynecomastia. This condition is more common than you might think, affecting over half of men in their lifetime. During the male breast reduction, I remove fat and glandular tissue from the chest that is masking the muscle beneath. If there is excess skin, I remove that as well. By working along the edges of the nipples and under the arms, I can successfully hide the incisions for minimal scarring.

Liposuction is part of the male breast reduction procedure, but it is also a common standalone procedure for men who seek spot reduction of fat that persists despite diet and exercise. The procedure takes about 90 minutes and complications are extremely rare in healthy patients. Most of my male patients are back to work within a few days and have noticeable results in three weeks with best results at the three month mark.

Outside of these two top body surgeries for men, I have also performed arm liftthigh lift and body lift surgery on male patients. Men, if you are unhappy with your look, and the changes you’ve made on your own aren’t enough, come and see me, I look forward to meeting with you at my Scottsdale or Mesa office.
