What Is a Facelift?

Facelifts are the gold standard of facial rejuvenation, yet the steps and results vary widely from surgeon to surgeon. You’ve likely heard of mini facelifts or short scar facelifts that promise short recoveries, but they also provide short-term results. Dr. Flint specializes in the traditional full facelift, prioritizing a meticulous approach to the procedure, patient safety, and customized techniques for a lasting, natural-looking result—no cutting corners or fad methodology here.

SMAS Technique

While Dr. Flint emphasizes the importance of custom procedures—no two patients are exactly alike—she favors the SMAS technique for facelift surgery. The SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) layer of the face comprises a fibrous network of connective tissue, muscle, and fat beneath the skin that provides structural support and controls facial expressions. The SMAS layer is the one that sags and loses structure as we age, and it’s the primary focus of the SMAS facelift technique Dr. Flint uses.

A SMAS facelift requires rigorous technique and surgical precision and is suitable only for the most experienced surgeons. While more technically challenging than other methods, Dr. Flint prefers the SMAS because it yields natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Combination Procedures: Dr. Flint’s Three-Prong Approach

Dr. Flint believes that surgery can only get you so far; a truly comprehensive facial rejuvenation result addresses all aspects of facial aging, including skin health and volume loss. As such, Dr. Flint uses a three-pronged approach to facial rejuvenation that includes a professional skincare consultation and at-home skincare routine, and minimally invasive treatments performed in-office by Dr. Flint, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections and dermal fillers to address concerns that surgery cannot.

The result is a truly comprehensive, natural-looking result. Healthy, radiant skin allows surgical results to shine, while precisely placed fillers and injectables restore volume for a stunning result.

Benefits of a Facelift

A successful facelift can breathe new life into those who feel older and less confident. Men and women who choose a facelift with Dr. Flint look and feel rejuvenated, vibrant, and healthy. Additional benefits of a facelift include:

  • A reduction of facial sagging and loss of structure
  • A tighter contour to the jawline and chin
  • Subtly lifted cheeks and nasolabial folds
  • Smoothed wrinkles and creases

It’s no secret that when you look your best, you feel your best. That is the ultimate goal of a facelift: to unify self-perception and facial aesthetics. Dr. Flint helps patients feel like their best selves without erasing or hiding natural features.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Facelift?

Patient safety begins with ensuring you are an ideal candidate for a facelift. In addition to seeking a more youthful appearance, ideal facelift candidates undergo a thorough screening and consultation to confirm they are healthy enough for surgery. This includes a medical history assessment, diagnostic testing, and in some cases an EKG. Additionally, facelift candidates:

  • Are in good health
  • Do not smoke or are willing to quit
  • Want to address facial aging
  • Have reasonable expectations for results

The best way to determine if you are a good fit for facelift surgery is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Flint. She will review your medical history and examine your face in preparation for the procedure. Call (480) 945-3300 or complete the contact form to request a consultation.

How a Facelift Is Performed

Your Facelift Consultation

The initial consultation is an important part of your facelift process, as Dr. Flint will walk you through the potential risks and results of the procedure. It’s important to note that each patient is different, and results will vary based on your anatomy, the extent of revision needed, and your overall goals. Patient education is a top priority for Dr. Flint, as informed patients can make the best decisions for themselves and are ultimately happier with the results.

Additionally, you should use your consultation as an opportunity to learn as much as you can from Dr. Flint about the procedure steps, recovery process, and potential outcomes. Dr. Flint will be honest with you and encourage you to make the best decision for yourself. If you both agree that a facelift is the ideal procedure, she will create a custom surgical plan that details the specifics of your procedure, including any accompanying surgeries such as eyelid surgery or a lip lift, and then provide you with an accurate cost estimate.

What to Expect During a Facelift

Facelifts are performed using general anesthesia, which is always administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Surgery is performed at Dr. Flint’s fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical center, after which you will be monitored in the recovery center for one night as you awake from surgery.

The surgical steps will vary, depending on your needs and the level of necessary revision. Generally, Dr. Flint repositions facial tissues into more youthful positions using a double-layer technique to address deep tissues. The skin is gently re-draped with no tension, avoiding a pulled or windswept look. All incisions are placed in inconspicuous areas and are made only when absolutely necessary. Facelift surgery takes about four hours, longer if a lip lift or eyelid lift is included.

Facelift Recovery & Aftercare

After your overnight stay in the recovery room, Dr. Flint will perform a quick exam to make sure you are recovering safely and then discharge you to the care of a responsible driver. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first few days of recovery.

Expect some bruising and swelling, which peak within the first two days or so. Discomfort is typically well-tolerated with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication. Dr. Flint will provide custom recovery instructions, and you can read our detailed facelift recovery guide here. Dr. Flint will also schedule multiple post-operative visits to check your progress and remove any sutures. Additionally, facelift recovery requires:

  • Incorporate light activity (walking around the house) as soon as you can
  • No lifting for three weeks
  • No strenuous activity for four weeks, or when Dr. Flint clears you

Most patients feel like themselves about two weeks after facelift surgery. You can resume most activities and attend social engagements at this time. Be sure to follow Dr. Flint’s instructions and ask her any questions you may have during your follow-up appointments or by calling the office.

What Results Can I Expect From a Facelift?

A facelift is a rewarding procedure that enhances your aesthetic to a more youthful, vibrant you, without erasing your features or making you look “done.” Dr. Flint is passionate about creating natural-looking results that make her patients feel refreshed and confident.
