Body lifting is primarily designed to help patient’s who have accomplished significant weight loss and have extra skin around the trunk, buttock and thighs. There are many different types of body lifts that can be performed to affect different goals. An examination by a board certified plastic surgeon is the best way to determine which of these procedures will accomplish your goals.
After significant weight loss, patients can find themselves disappointed in their appearance. While losing excess weight generally makes patients feel better, large amounts of excess skin can be unsightly. The results of these surgical procedures provide the much deserved cosmetic improvements for patients who have succeeded at weight loss.
Many body lifts utilize an incision that extends completely around the trunk, from just above the pubis on the abdomen and extending to the area just above the buttock cleft on the back. This allows excess skin and fatty deposits to be removed from the abdomen, and for the buttocks to be lifted. Extra skin and fatty deposits are also removed from the area on the lower back just above the buttocks. Positive effect is also generally noted on any excess skin that exists in the upper outer thigh. Many times, liposuction is also performed to improve contouring.
Safety is very important to any surgical procedure. Dr. Flint screens all of her body lift patients to insure their nutrition is adequate and any other pre-existing medical conditions are stable. Patients should obtain their goal weight and maintain it for at least six months prior to pursuing surgery. Smoking cessation should be accomplished prior to surgery to insure better healing.
The procedure is performed with the patient under general anesthesia and frequently takes between four and six hours. Most patients stay overnight in the recovery care center for at least one night and some patients choose to stay for two nights. Discomfort is managed with pain medications for approximately two weeks. No lifting or exercise is allowed for six weeks. Most patients return to work in three to four weeks.
Dr. Flint thoroughly enjoys working with weight loss patients. Designing a surgical plan that addresses the patients goals, and then executing the surgery is very rewarding.
