Juvéderm Side Effects (Hint: They’re Good Ones!)

For those hoping to improve the appearance of wrinkles or restore volume lost to the natural facial aging process, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are often recommended. In fact, in my practice, I solely offer fillers that are formulated with hyaluronic acid, such as Juvéderm, for their proven track record of safe, natural-looking results.

Before using a new product, many patients are understandably concerned about any potential side effects. A recent study, conducted by one of Brazil’s leading scientific research schools, sought to look at the effects of regular injections of hyaluronic acid, and you may be surprised to learn what they found.

Can regular injections provide long-lasting improvement?

The researchers discovered that regular hyaluronic acid-based filler use does not just temporarily fill lines or volumize the face; it also has the potential “side effect” of improving your skin’s natural anti-aging properties following treatment. During the study, 20 women between the ages of 40 to 50 years old received hyaluronic acid filler injections focused on preauricular areas and nasolabial folds. Skin biopsies were performed before treatment and at three and nine month follow-up appointments to gauge how the patients responded.

The majority of the participants demonstrated clinical improvement in skin appearance by producing significantly more collagen fibers at three months and nine months after the procedure. The research found additional improvement at 12 and 16 month increments, showing an increase in epidermal layers.

What does this mean for you as a patient?

Collagen is a protein that naturally occurs in your skin, keeping it looking young and firm by providing strength and structure. As we age, the production of collagen begins to slow. This is what contributes to loss of skin elasticity, which makes room for skin sagging and the development of wrinkles.

This study suggests that hyaluronic acid injections prompt your body’s natural production of collagen, indicating that regular treatment could produce long-lasting improvement of not just your appearance, but of the structural properties of your skin.

Working with a professional makes all the difference

There are many different brands and formulations of injectable fillers, so it’s important to work with a board certified plastic surgeon who can help you determine the best options for you. An experienced medical doctor brings an understanding of facial structure, how skin responds to different formulations, and the best treatment course for addressing specific concerns. Additionally, a knowledgeable provider can work with you if you are displeased with the results; hyaluronic acid filler injections can be completely and safely dissolved.

If you are in Scottsdale or beyond, I would be glad to assist you in exploring your options and designing a treatment plan that is safe and effective for your individual needs. I encourage you to contact my office to schedule a personalized consultation.
