Announcing the 2015 Dr. Patti Flint Women in Science Scholarship

We are thrilled to announce the first annual Dr. Patti Flint Women in Science Scholarship. Open to female students in Arizona interested in a career in medicine or natural science, the Dr. Patti Flint Women in Science Scholarship aims to support women pursuing education in a traditionally male-dominated field.

“As a female plastic surgeon, I understand not only the challenges of working in the medical field as a woman, but also the obstacles that can exist when pursuing education in hard sciences,” says Dr. Patti Flint, founder of the scholarship. “We need to support, encourage, and empower our women in science, and it is my hope that this scholarship does just that.”

Women in science are encouraged to apply for the scholarship via an online form, with submissions accepted September 1st through November 1st, 2015. Female Arizona residents who are pursuing a degree in medicine or natural science at an Arizona college or university are eligible, and Dr. Flint encourages both traditional and nontraditional students to apply.

Dr. Flint hopes her scholarship can help the selected student pursue her education at one of the fine higher education institutions here in Arizona. “I love Arizona, which is why I chose to build my business and raise my family here,” Dr. Flint states. “I want to encourage students to explore their educational opportunities in the area, in addition to helping them meet the financial requirements of doing so.”

The application process was designed to be as simple and accessible as possible, requiring only a letter of recommendation, basic personal and educational information, and the answering of three short essay questions. Alternatively, women who are comfortable in front of a camera may submit a video application via YouTube.

Applications will be reviewed by the scholarship committee and the recipient will be chosen based on adherence to guidelines and quality of submission. The recipient of the scholarship will receive $2,500 to be used toward tuition and educational expenses, awarded to the student in the form of a cash prize.
