Sunnyslope High School Senior Receives 2016 Dr. Patti Flint Women in Science Scholarship
Alana Herman has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship to be used for her college expenses
Scottsdale plastic surgeon Patti Flint, MD, PC is pleased to announce the recipient of her second annual Dr. Patti Flint Women in Science Scholarship, high school senior Alana Herman of Phoenix, AZ.
Dr. Flint established the Women in Science scholarship program in 2015 to support female students in Arizona who plan to pursue careers in engineering, medicine, and natural sciences. The Women in Science Scholarship is open to female residents of Arizona who plan to attend community college or university in Arizona and pursue a degree or vocational program in medicine, healthcare, pharmacology, biology, physics or chemistry.
“We had a number of impressive applicants this year, and narrowing down the selection was difficult,” claims Dr. Flint. “However, Alana was a natural choice; she is an intelligent and passionate young woman with a very bright future ahead of her.”
Alana recently turned 18 and is a current senior at Sunnyslope High School with a passion for science, particularly finding a cure for common diseases, such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Alana hopes to make her mark in science as a strong, capable woman.
“A woman’s potential should not be limited by her sex, and I will contest to this fundamental value in my drive to become a nurse practitioner, surgeon, or doctor,” said Alana in her essay. “Women may comprise a majority in the nurse practitioner profession, but we consistently receive a smaller wage than men. I hope to resolve this disparity by fighting for equal pay and joining organizations that empower women in science.”
In addition to her academic success, Alana has also offered much of her time to her community by volunteering at local hospitals, fundraising for the pediatrics department, and participating in local service projects. Congratulations, Alana, on this well-deserved accomplishment!
